Looking for the latest Social Media user stats for India? Continuing with the series of stats, facts and numbers for 2014; here I am pleased to share the latest numbers for the Indian landscape. India has been one of the major consumers when it comes to social media, brands in India today are much aware of the potential and value that social media can deliver them as compared to other channels.
I usually don’t include too much stats in my presentations but this client I met yesterday was novice to the industry so I had to include these stats. Even though these stats are only a handful, it will help you making more informed decisions for your brand’s social media presence online when targeting Indian audiences-
Internet usage
What I find appalling is that from the huge population of 1.237 Billion only a small chunk uses internet (that makes me happy too, lot of opportunities you know).- There are 243 Million internet users in India.
- Total users may increase to 500 Million by 2018
- India will become larger than the US in terms of number of Internet users by the end of 2014 – Rajan Anandan, MD, Google India
Mobile Usage
There has been a surge in the mobile usage, with the emergence of the Smartphone generation a major chunk of people access internet and social media from their mobile phones.- The mobile penetration of active internet users is 220 Million. It is of paramount importance to make your sites, pages mobile optimized.
- There are total 92+ Million active social media users via their mobile, which is almost 41% of the total mobile internet users.
Digital Media in India
Digital media has changed the meaning of traditional means of advertising and selling, India has been following the trend as well and the following stats prove it is only going to get bigger and better!- Digital Advertising has also been witnessing a steady growth. The online advertising market in India to touch Rs 2,938 Crore.
- e-Commerce in India is expected to reach $24 billion (Rs 1,07,800 crores) by the year 2015, which explains the emphasis on E-retail stores like Flipkart, Myntra etc. and the inclusion of buy button in social networks such as Twitter & Facebook (It will be interesting to see how brands leverage these functions in their strategy.)
Social Media in India
Indians are very active on different social networks and 88% of users share content on their social profiles and as well are increasingly spending time on various social networking sites as mentioned below.Before that, check out what I found on tumblr-
- Facebook is the most browsed social network on social media with a large base of 100 Million users, clearly it is not fading away anytime soon in India. More than 80% of those users access Facebook via their mobile phone.
- Total Twitter users in India are 33 Million and from this base 76% of users access it via their mobile phone.
- LinkedIn has 26 Million India users, of the total 300+ Million users.
- Of the total chunk of 70 Million total users in Pinterest, 5.5 Million comprise from India.
- Instagram the usage is more dominated by men in comparison to women; ratio being 75/25. It shows only 1/4th of the women population in India are on Instagram, looks like selfies are more appreciated by men than women!
- The most shared type of videos is film or movie trailers.

Social Media Demographic Statistics
1. 75% of male internet users are on Facebook as well as 83% of female internet users.
2. According to recode, 44% of teenagers asked to choose one social network if “trapped on a deserted island” chose Snapchat, ahead of Instagram (24 percent) and Facebook (14 percent).
3. Female internet users are more likely to use Instagram than men, at 38% vs. 26%.
4. 29% of internet users with college degrees use Twitter, compared to 20% with high school degrees or less.

Social Media Usage Statistics
1. Facebook continues to be the most widely used social media platform, with 79% of American internet users. Based on total population, (not just internet users) 68% of U.S. adults (you know, your customers) use it. What are you waiting for? Start advertising on Facebook already!
2. Instagram receives the silver medal with 32% of users, Pinterest coming in a close third with 31%, and LinkedIn and Twitter at 29% and 24% respectively.
3. Per Statista, in the last quarter of 2017, 1.37 billion active users visited Facebook on a daily basis. Overall, daily active users accounted for 66 percent of monthly active users. (Check out 75 fascinating stats about Facebook here.)
4. The average LinkedIn user spends 17 minutes on the site per month.
5. 51% of Instagram users access the platform daily, and 35% say they look at the platform several times per day.
6. Almost 80% of time spent on social media platforms happens on mobile.
7. Katy Perry has the most worldwide twitter followers, at 94.65 million.
8. Over 400 million snaps are shared on Snapchat per day, and almost 9,000 photos are shared every second.
9. Just 10 thousand YouTube videos have generated more than 1 billion views.
10. More than half of all YouTube views are on mobile devices.

1. Instagram earns $595 million in mobile ad revenue per year, a rapidly increasing number.
2. Despite news of layoffs and executives leaving the company, Twitter’s revenue is up 8% YOY

3. 59% of Americans with social media accounts think that customer service through social media has made it easier to get questions answered and issues resolved.
4. Over 50 million businesses use Facebook Business Pages.
5. 2 million business use to Facebook for advertising.
6. Per Forbes, Facebook reported 47% growth in revenue to about $17.4 billion in the first half of 2017 over the same period last year.
7. 93% of Pinterest users use the platform to plan or make purchases.

6. More than 1 million LinkedIn users have published long-form content, with 160,000 long-form posts being published weekly. and over 19.7 million SlideShare presentations have been uploaded to the platform.
7. 88% of businesses with more than 100 employees use twitter for marketing purposes.
8. The user-submitted YouTube video with the most views is “Charlie bit my finger” with over 845 million views.
9. Pizza is the most widely instagrammed food, directly ahead of steak and sushi.
10. Blogging continues to grow, with over 409 million people viewing more than 23.6 billion pages each month on WordPress alone.
