Or Hell difficulty for that matter..
Is it me or are the other difficulties like completely unplayable? Like cant get out of the first room unplayable? Like takes 40+hits to kill a level1 skeleton unplayable? Whats the point?
Seems insane to even bother with it.
I do like the expansion though, thats cool

You have to complete the Normal difficulty first, and then start a new game with a properly leveled up character. Preferrable a character you completed Normal difficulty with. This character should be at the proper level of 20 - 25+, and thus be able to survive Nightmare difficulty. Same thing with Hell difficulty you have to complete Nighmare difficulty to have a character of the proper level. If I recall Hell difficulty requires a character of level 30 - 35+, but it's been ages the last time I did a full run on all difficulties. Thus my memory could be wrong on the character level requirements for Hell.

you can actually start in level 1 in nightmare difficulty and still beat the game. its really not that hard but you need a little luck
as for hell you need to be at least level 10 to beat that difficulty.
i have done the 2 above with the warrior.

In multiplayer, entering Nightmare required character level 20. Entering Hell difficulty required character level 30. Higher difficulties are very playable with those levels.

As previously been stated, Nightmare and Hell difficulties are meant for higher level characters.
In fact, the original game did not have any difficulties beyond Normal in single player (but there was a trick..), it was only added for the Hellfire expansion. Diablo Multiplayer always had Nightmare and Hell difficulties, but they required a character to have reached level 20 or 30.
Now about the trick, if you have a high enough level multiplayer character you can create a Nightmare or Hell difficulty, leave, then create a new singleplayer game, which would now have that difficulty.
Unfortunately NM and Hell doesn't actually bring that much more to the game, and the game's item generation is bugged causing item drops to have magic prefix/suffixes as if it had dropped on normal mode. So you're better off just doing hell runs (dungeon levels 13-16) on Normal than moving onto Nightmare and Hell (with the exception for if you plan to level your character to 50, in which case moving onto the later difficulties is eventually required).
There is one more reason. The Helm of Sprits - one of the rarer items in the game, can only drop on the first few levels of Nightmare.

Beware that the difficulty is not saved, so this trick must be repeated each time you restart the program.phredreeke: the game's item generation is bugged causing item drops to have magic prefix/suffixes as if it had dropped on normal mode.
The game's bugs are extensively documented, and this is the first time I've ever seen someone claim that this particular aspect of item generation is a bug. Could you explain why you think this is a bug? The base items are upgraded as a function of the modified mlvl. The qlvl remains tied to the unmodified mlvl.phredreeke

Maybe it's not a bug, maybe it's just overlooked. Either way, it means item drops in early Nightmare and Hell are more or less useless to a character high enough level to venture there.advowson

Overlooked by the developers. And it wouldn't be the only case of nonsensical item logic in the game (the bow Deadly Hunter for example has a +200% damage vs demons property which only functions on Melee weapons) GrimjackMV: Phree is incorrect. Higher difficulty settings result in an increased chance for higher quality item drops.
The quality of the base item increases, the quality of affixes do not. So while a Long War Bow may drop in Nightmare Church, its prefix and/or suffix will be no better than had it dropped on normal.Pages:

So I've started this game recently in Single Player and I'm enjoying it a lot but I couldn't find a difficulty adjuster. Further reading online I found about the Nightmare and Hell modes, can I unlock those in Single Player mode too?
I know a few of you here play/ed the game and would like your insight.
Thanks
PS: I have no intention of creating a B.net account, all I wish to know is if I can play those difficulties in single player and maybe LAN in the future.

Once you beat the game you will have a prompt every time you click your character to play Normal, Nightmare, and Hell depending on how many you've unlocked.
You can play it all Single Player for sure and can play it as well in LAN I'm pretty sure but not certain.
edit: it works a bit differently. it's so much a difficulty adjustment as it is a New Game+ before the notion/fad/whatever of New Game+ existed.
You'll basically start the game over with all of your gear and levels. The monsters will be tougher and there will be more champions and heroes (named randoms). Uniques usually are a different color pallette. The gear is better. including some really cool stuff (not that you'll ever find it without cheating. I recommend cheating.) that you can only find in Nightmare and Hell difficulty (some of the Nightmare uniques even have their own art, Hell stuff is usually just palette of Nightmare stuff).

I believe it's per character. Yep, that's a lot of doin' over.
But you wouldn't want to start a new character on Nightmare. You wouldn't make it 20 feet from the town.

For a moment I thought the difficulty was a B.Net thing only, I guess all I'll be missing is a few unique drops found only on official servers, I can live with that.

Like others said, difficulty in Diablo 2 is basically lets you restart the same game with your character that you finished before with higher level monsters. There is no way you can survive the higher difficulties with a new character.
In other words, there is no difficulty 'setting' in Diablo 2.

Diablo 2 Sorceress Hell Difficulty
Ganni1987: So I've started this game recently in Single Player and I'm enjoying it a lot but I couldn't find a difficulty adjuster.
There is actually a difficulty adjuster, but it doesn't modify the normal/nightmare/hell modes. Assuming you have at least patch 1.09, you can use the Players X Command to make the game think there are X players in game instead of 1. This means the monsters will have more HP, they will hit harder, and they will give more XP and items as well.Ganni1987

If you want to play something a little more advanced and interesting and harder, Zy-El is a good patch, but requires a little manual work to do it.
The /players X is a good option, although until you have at least 1-2 posters you aren't going to be using it much.. well, maybe for chests to boost better item drops.

General discussionThese three areas all have one Uber creature, who is not immune but has extremely high resistances, a very fast health recovery rate, and all minions are 2x harder.
In the Furnace of Pain you battle Uber Izzy. Izzy is the easiest of the three ubers, although the Pit Lords in the area are immune to Magic, Cold, Fire, Ice, and Lighting. Izzy drops Mephisto's Brain (that explains a lot, doesn't it?).
Maxst ar sdk for android 10. MAXST AR SDK provides optimal development environment for augmented reality apps. Fast and robust recognition/tracking performance; Multi platform supported: Unity 3D, Android, iOS, Windows, MacOS.
In the Matron's Den you battle Lilith, who is Andariel's sister. Mostly everything in the area is immune to Cold and Lightning. Lilith drops Diablo's Horn (he was her lover..YUCK!).
In the Forgotten Sands you battle Uber Duriel. He is the worst of the three with very high Physical Immunity and Holy Freeze, and drops Baal's Eye (no wonder Baal needed a seeing-eye clone to help him fight!).
Once you have all three items, you transmute them in Harrogath in Act 5 to make the final portal, which takes you to Uber Tristram, where you battle Uber Diablo, Uber Baal and Uber Mephisto (AKA, the Uber Three Stooges).
Uber Diablo is the same as the creature that used tp appear as the result of the sale of SOJ's. He is the easiest of the three to kill. Uber Baal is similar to the Baal we all know as far as skills and spells are concerned, but he is surrounded by Vampire Lords that are Physical Immune. Uber Mephisto seems to be interested in getting back at us for all those Meph runs. He has an extremely fast teleport skill, raises undead Skeleton Archers, Mages and Fighters, and has a Conviction aura. Mephy is the hardest of the three.
In Diablo 2, there are many fun and powerful builds but not all of them are resilient enough to survive Hell difficulty. If you’re familiar with Diablo 2’s Hell mode, you will already know that the things you have to worry about the most are:
- Monsters’ immunities: You will need at least two different elements of damage, especially if you play solo with your character.
- Your Elemental Resistances: In Hell difficulty, you will start with a penalty (minus Resistances), so you will need a decent amount of Resistances.
- Your damage: Many monsters have a very large Health pool in Hell mode, so you will need to deal a good amount of damage.
Below there are some top performing builds that are able not only to beat Hell difficulty, but also to Magic Find almost in any area. These builds are effective in Ladder, Single, and Multi-player games:
Despite its high Strength requirement, the Immortal King set provides everything you need to dominate in the highest difficulty of the game.
This set offers a huge amount of defense and very high elemental Resistances. In addition, the Stone Crusher (the Weapon of the set) deals all the five different types of damage. Thus, you don’t have to worry about the immune monsters.
Last but not least, the Immortal King set provides a decent amount of Magic Finding.
Summonmancer (Summoner Necromancer)
This is an excellent choice for both solo and multiplayer games. Your army of skeletons can protect you and your party for receiving damage, while taking down enemies at the same times. Also, your curses are very useful for your party members as they can lower the resists of the enemies, resulting in much faster runs.
For dealing with monsters’ immunities, you can take advantage of your Corpse Explosion skill (half Physical and half Fire Damage). Further, your Skeletal Mages deal Poison, Cold, Fire and Lightning Damage. This build’s damage isn’t very high, but it offers a lot of sustainability in exchange.
In terms of items, the Skelemancer needs some items that boost his Summoning skills in order for the skeletons to survive in Hell difficulty. Despite this fact, you can use some items with Magic Finding as well because this build is not so gear-dependant.
This kind of Sorceress doesn’t have the highest damage output in comparison with other Sorceress builds. However, it can deal with immune monsters as it relies on both Fire (Meteor, Fire Ball) and Cold Spells (Frozen Orb). The monsters that are immune to both Fire and Cold Spells are not common.
Another great skill of your arsenal is Teleport. You can use it to quickly escape if you are in danger, or utilize it for traveling faster. For instance, you can make very fast Andariel or Mephisto runs, without exploring entire rooms in order to reach the Act Bosses.
Also, with the proper items you can combine your killing power with some great amount of Magic Finding. It’s a popular strategy to start the game with a Magic-Finder Meteorb Sorceress, so you gear her up or your other characters.
This is one of the most powerful builds overall in Diablo 2. It’s strong both in fighting versus monsters and in PvP fights. We included this build over other strong Paladin builds because of its ability to Magic Find, without losing much of its killing power or its sustainability.
The main skill of the build, the Blessed Hammer deals extreme amounts of Magic Damage. The Magic immunity is very rare in the game, so you will not have many issues in Hell difficulty. Further, the Holy Shield skill provides a lot of protection to your character.
You should be able to go through all difficulties of the game using a Hammerdin, without facing many problems. However, for fighting versus other players you will need some really hard-to-find items that you can’t find simply by beating the game’s Hell difficulty. If you’re interested in building one of the top PvP classes, don’t hesitate to take a look in our shop!
This Amazon’s build can make some of the fastest runs in the game. Its arsenal includes some Physical and Lightning skills (Charged Strike, Lightning Strike, Lightning Fury) that deal extreme amounts of damage.
For dealing with enemies’ immunities, a Javazon can utilize the Jab skill (Physical Damage) or even the Poison Javelin or Plague Javelin for some Poison Damage.
Regarding your sustainability, you can sacrifice some portion of your damage in order to invest points in your Valkyrie. Finally, you can use some items that boost your Magic Finding chance. This way, you can make some fast and efficient MF runs even in the hardest difficulty of the game.
